Pitchers doing great – batters are lazy slobs?

I’m not going to write much at all about this because, well, baseball is pretty irrelevant among anyone under 40.  But anyone who kind of follows the sport knows that pitchers are dominant this year.  There are a lot of theories… the popular one being that after weeding out a lot of steroid use, batters are at a disadvantage.  Another popular theory is that the end of amphetamine use is hurting batters.  I think the latter is the more likely story and it really irks me.  Really?  You play baseball… you guys can’t keep your energy level up without popping some uppers every night?  Baseball requires about as much athletic ability as bowling.  So once or twice a night you have to run kinda hard to beat out a throw on the bases or chase down a ball in the corner of the outfield?  The other 3 hours, you’re sitting on a bench chatting with your buddies.  You can’t handle that?  Starting NBA players run back and forth for 35+ minutes a night, go to the club until 3AM, have practice in the morning and still manage to perform well without amphetamines.  Why can’t the glorified beer league guys make it through the night without the same?  Maybe they’re getting bored to sleep, much like the folks in the stands…
